Delight
Br. David Kaczmarek, TOR

The earliest memory cant be more than light
light absorbed in
sound
and scent
and sense
the never-ending,
opened-mind of infants,
controlled, yet changing,
and all without a sight.

First day, to break away,
the hold so tight
but not so tight to keep from yearning hands
what all is new,
and ever opening lands;
a tear begins,
the end in laughing might.

The middle memory,
light as bright as white,
with nothing to impede the furthest goal;
the later memory,
light that fights the night,
but never lacking
that which made the whole.

And that is life,
and sound
and sense
and light
the earliest memory,
one of pure delight.
