 An elderly woman
in her late-eighties from Toms River, New Jersey, sharp as a tack,
wanted to give the Community a gift. A gift annuity, perhaps? She
said she was too old for that. Maybe a bequest? She insisted the
gift be in the form of a statue. So, when you enter the front
driveway of the Monastery, a five foot image of Christ crucified,
mounted on a huge wooden cross, will welcome you. The statue is the
gift of Amelia DeGeiso, in
memory of her family. The wood for the cross, the electrical wiring
and lighting, and the concrete in which it stands secure, and their
craftsmanship, were donated by Joseph Saclaro, Robert Martino, and
John Tomlinson. Maestro Richard Kuiawa provided musical
accompaniments. Pictures were sent to Amelia, detailing the project
from start to finish.
This new crucifix stands thirteen feet above ground, and replaces
the cross first erected by Father Emiles novitiate class of 1972.
This cross now stands in the grove of pine trees near the Priory and
Iona Hall. Canopied by those pine trees one has the opportunity to
make the Stations of the Cross. Fourteen outdoor shrines of red
cedar wood were crafted and donated by David Palazzi and his Family,
of Altoona, cousin of
Father Christopher. The friars of Loretto donated the plaques.
Chris, our custodian, was instrumental in both projects.
These two shrine areas will be blessed and dedicated on the 80th
Anniversary of the Feast of St. Bernardine.

 On
Thursday, February 28, the friars of the region gathered together
for a Lenten Day of Reflection at New Smyrna Beach. The day began
with a simple lunch followed by a guided reflection led by Fr.
Benjamin Berinti, C.PP.S. The theme was taken from the Book of
Exodus, with the reflection centering on our own need to be led by
God out of the slavery of sin as well as our hard-heartedness at
times, towards the reconciliation offered by God. Following the
reflection, the friars had time for personal reflection and
enjoyment of the natural beauty of New Smyrna Beach. The day
concluded with Evening Prayer and Dinner.
