Food may not be the first thing you think of when you hear the word, Franciscan.
Francis is perceived as a great ascetic. Yet, popular imagination frequently
portrays his spiritual heirs as jolly, rotund merrymakers. Plump, robed and corded
friars are portrayed on a whole host of kitchen items from beer steins to cookie jars.

Franciscan iconography portrays our Seraphic Father in communion
with the birds and deer and bunnies. His followers, on the
other hand, are more likely to be seen "communing" with the
fermented fruit of the vine or gnawing on the leg of a lamb.
Have we strayed from a way of life
loved by St. Francis? We think not! Food plays a significant role in
the mythos of Franciscanism. Francis himself intuitively
recognized that the sharing of food is always a touchstone with the
sacred. Food mediates the communion that we all seek with everything
and everyone around us.
