Robert DAversa
provided the following synopsis of highlights from his sojourns in
Europe. Robert
completes his special assignment as spiritual director for the Irish
College in Rome in June.
Salutti e tutti!
We began the
year with a pilgrimage to Turkey in the footsteps of Saint Paul.
Several sites were remarkable: one had to do with Paul himself,
namely, to stand in the amphitheater in Ephesus where he preached;
the second was to stand in the history of the early church in Hagia
Sophia (Constantinople) and then finally to visit the Orthodox
Patriarchate which was being spruced up for the (then) impending
visit of Pope Benedict. It was, if you will, stepping into the
scriptures, into church history and into the challenge of the
present call to seek the reunion of the churches of the East and
West.
The next
highlight was to be invited to join one of the Irish Bishops, John
Kirby, during his
ad limina
visit and being able to meet the pope in a brief encounter.
During my
sojourn here, I've been involved in a group of English-speaking
spiritual directors. We are all working with seminarians and so the
group is comprised of English, Scots, North Americans, and Irish. I
led the discussion and hosted them here at the Irish College in
December. The theme was spirituality prior to the two mid-lives,
the chronological and the ministerial.
A few things on
the horizon are an overnighttrip, a gift of the Irish hierarchy, to
what was their former summer villa in Gaeta with the purpose of
visiting those sites that were important in the life of Saint Thomas
Aquinas and his commentator Saint Cajetan (Gaetano). Finally, two
retreats are scheduled in Lent, one for the graduate priests to take
place in Assisi, and the other for the seminarians to take place in
Bagnoregio (home of Saint Bonaventure). I will participate in both
retreats and perfect my levitation skills.

A perk of life in
Rome. Pope Benedict XVI meets Robert DAversa.
