PENITENTIAL SPIRITUALITY
IN THE FRANCISCAN SOURCES

Methodology

red_fwd.gif (1120 bytes)  | Back |

In dealing with the material assigned to me, it would have been possible to proceed in two directions, both valid: I could have examined the Franciscan Sources chronologically (Writings of St. Francis, the Early Biographies and Chronicles) grouping the penitential motives as they present themselves in their spontaneity and fragmentary form (historic-analytic method); or I could have grouped the material logically coordinated and individualized in the same sources (thematic method). I found this second procedure more useful for my readers, if notably more demanding.
