Subject : Notice of the death of Bro. Paolo Interrante, TOR
On January 2, 2002, in our Monastery of S. Calogero al Monte of Sciacca, at the age of 91, with 49 years of religious life in the TOR,

BRO. PAOLO INTERRANTE TOR

Paolo%20I.jpg (2631 bytes)

a religious of our Province of SS. Joachim and Ann, on account of old age, died peacefully, assisted by his confreres. He would have had his 92nd birthday on January 15, 2002.

Bro. Paolo was born in Sciacca on January 15, 1910 to Ignazio and Giuseppa Guzzardo. He was baptized on the same day. He entered San Calogero as a hermit in 1938. Later, he became attached to our Sanctuary and transferred to our Order, having made the Novitiate at Sciacca. He made Temporary Profession on March 15, 1953 and Solemn Profession on April 8, 1956, both in the Sanctuary of San Calogero. He was always in the Community of San Calogero, wearing the habit of hermits. Similar to other confreres he dedicated himself to the Office of the Sanctuary. Wherever he went he carried the Good News, giving witness to Jesus with a true Franciscan spirit; he was a sign of peace and unity.

Because of advanced age, he retired from the Sanctuary's Office; he also dedicated himself to the needs of the Fraternity with availability and promptness. He always manifested serenity and Franciscan joy. He was a holy religious, rooted in prayer.

At the Liturgy of Christian Burial, celebrated in the Basilica of San Calogero on 3nd of January, the M.. Provincial Father Vincenzo Santalucia presided; also present were Religious of the Province, Diocesan Priests, family members, friends and parishioners.

OBJECT: Notice of the death of Bro. GREGORIO LEONARDI, TOR
After a long period of serious illness which was borne with Franciscan serenity and sincere abandonment to the will of God, our brother,

BRO. GREGORIO LEONARDI, T.O.R.

a friar of the Province of the Sts. Joachim and Ann for the past 38 years, died at the age of 72 at the Convent of St. Calogero al Monte di Sciacca on January 20, 2002.

Bro. Gregorio (whose baptism name was Sebastiano), was born at Zafferana Etnea in Catania on October 14, 1929, to Sebastiano and Russo Venera. He was baptized on November 26, 1929, confirmed on October 2, 1950, and entered the Convent of St. Calogero at Sciacca in 1950 as a hermit. Bro. Gregorio entered the novitiate at Sciacca on January 28, 1964, and professed his Simple Vows on April 29, 1964. He remained as a member of the fraternity of St. Calogero and professed Solemn Vows on May 14, 1967.

For the whole of his religious life Bro. Gregorio was a member of the community of St. Calogero where he dressed and lived as a hermit. His assignments included work as a sacristan, organist and liturgical animator - offices that he fulfilled scrupulously and with Carthusian precision. He was available to the community at all times and completed even the humblest of his duties with care. Among other responsibilities, he was dedicated to the preparation of the sanctuary for the reception of groups of pilgrims and was always ready to accompany them for a visit to the grotto of the saint. He was also often in demand to sing at the celebration of the marriages at the sanctuary.

Approximately one year ago Bro. Gregorio entered the hospital in Castelvetrano and underwent a very serious operation. After his stay in the hospital he returned to the convento where, under the care physicians, he was able to resume a normal life. In October of 2001 it was necessary for him to return to the hospital and he was admitted to the hospital at Salemi and to the department of the surgeon who had previously operated on him. This time Bro. Gregorio underwent a more serious and delicate operation than he had the first time. The procedure was extremely rigorous and complications which occurred in his urinary tract led to his death. During his long stays in the hospital he was assisted by the friars of the fraternities of St. Calogero and the Convento del Giglio and by the continuous presence of his sister Maria Rosa and his brother-in-law Georgio.

On January 21 the Rite of Christian burial was celebrated by the Minister Provincial, the Very Rev. Vincenzo Santalucia, in the Basilica of St. Calogero. Many religious of the province, priests of the diocesan clergy, family members, friends and parishioners were also present for the celebration.

Bro. Gregorio’s earthly remains were interred in the cemetery of Sciacca.

May he rest in peace!

Subject: Communication of the death of Bro. Etienne Chauffingeal. Delegation of Our Lady of the Assumption - France.

Tuesday, 26 February of 2002

Bro. Etienne Chauffingeal, TOR

(1914-2002)

The friars in the community of Our Lady in La Drche have informed us that our dear brother Bro. Etienne Chauffingeal died on Tuesday, February 26, 2002, at 7:30 p.m. in the Clinic of Claude-Bernard in Alb.

After many difficult years due to deformities caused by rheumatism, Bro. Etienne entered the Collgiale Sainte Ccile in Alb, a rest home for elderly priests. He lived at the home for six years surrounded with great of care and attention. Everyone admired him for his tremendous patience and serenity. While his health permitted, Bro. Etienne participated in the daily celebration of the Eucharist in the chapel of the Collgiale. However, due to increasing pulmonary complications, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to the Clinic of Claude-Bernard in Alb where he died shortly after receiving the Sacrament of the Sick.

Bro. Etienne was born to a devout Christain family in Corrze in Saint-Julien Maumont on July 10, 1914, and received the name of Franois (Francis) at his baptism. For schooling he was sent to Ambialet and later entered the novitiate. Bro. Etienne made his first profession on August 20,1934, and lived his whole life in friary in Ambialet.

Our Bro. Etienne was a quiet and discreet man and worked hard at the many gifts God gave him as a technician, mechanic and gardener. It is clear that he had a special savoir-faire and was competent in many areas. Often he would be the one friars looked to for help in resolving a multitude of problems the community faced in its daily life. All who encountered him recovered a sense of peace as a result of his kind, friendly face and brotherly smile.

He devoted his life to the service of the candidates for religious and priestly life. Bro. Etienne always welcomed the priests and brothers who worked as missionaries in Brazil many of whom were his students, with great joy. He was filled with happiness during the visits of the French friars who were entrusted with the missions, it was a reward for his long service and dedicated life.

May the peace of the Lord fill your soul, Bro. Etienne! We pray that Bro. Etienne may intercede for us together with our other brothers he admired so much and who have also recently gone to the Lord: Fr. Andr Grange and Fr. Armando Rey. Together with Saint Stephen may they all participate in the Wedding Feast of the Lamb.

We ask that the suffrages for Bro. Etienne’s eternal rest, as prescribed by the General Statutes (61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67) be offered throughout the Order.

Subject: Death of Bro. Rafael Terrassa Lliteras, TOR

At the age of 87 and after 70 years of religious life
our friend and brother,

Brother Rafael Terrassa Lliteras, TOR

rafael.jpg (4439 bytes)

died at the Porcincula, Majorca, on Sunday March 17, 2002. At the time of his death he was a member of the fraternity of the Porcincula as a resident in the provincial infirmary.

Brother Rafael was born in Art, Majorca, on February 10, 1915, to Rafael Terrassa Esteva (+1971) and Ana Lliteras Sureda (+1968) as the sixth of nine siblings. Brother is survived by three of his brothers: Francisco, Miguel and Antonio, also a TOR friar. His youngest brother, Fr. Antonio Terrassa Lliteras, TOR, a friar and priest of our Spanish TOR Province, has dedicated many years of service to the USA and Mexico. Presently he resides in the Friary of St. Antony of Padua at Art.

Bro. Rafael was invested in the TOR habit on February 13, 1931, at the Porcincula and professed his first vows in the same friary on August 25, 1932. He professed his Solemn Vows at Ntra. Sig.ra. di Cura on September 21, 1943.

From 1932 to 1936 he was stationed at the Porcincula. During the Spanish Civil War, from 1936 to 1943, Bro. Rafael served in the army and resided at S. Francisco di Palma di Majorca. He also spent about two months at the Sanctuary of Cura in 1938.

In 1943 he was once again assigned to the Sanctuary of Cura in order to help with the running of the house.

In 1945 Bro. Rafael was transferred to Quintanar de la Orden, Toledo, where he served as a sacristan.

From 1947 to 1970 he was assigned to S. Francisco di Inca, except for two brief periods: some months in the friary of Art as a sacristan in 1962 and for one year at S. Francisco di Palma (1963-64).

In 1970 Bro. Rafael moved to the friary of St. Antony of Padua in Art, Majorca, his native town, where he served as a sacristan. He stayed at Art until the Provincial Chapter of 1997 at which time he was transferred to the provincial infirmary at the friary of the Porcincula.

In his simplicity and quiet temperament Bro. Rafael was an able worker and was always very particular and creative in the care and decoration of the churches in which he was stationed. During the course of his long service he handmade figures, scale models, and ornaments from simple things like sea and snail shells, algae and pieces of stone. He was even able to hold some exhibitions in which he showcased these popular creations.

The following are comments made by Fr. G. Mateu, TOR, on the occasion of one of these exhibitions:

"The artistic work of Bro. Rafael, TOR, is an faithful refection of the popular culture and penetrates the deepest sanctuary of his soul. His personal world presents itself to us in these magnificent compositions which speak with delight of the mystery of his humanity. Bro. Rafael transforms the elements of the sea - shells, stones, algae, etc. - into living and joyful creations which sing forth in beauty. His ever searching spirit contemplates the smallest details of these articles, he caresses them and turns them into popular poetry. He has the gift of creativity which demonstrates the artistic side of his personality and which, in its purest form, expresses the way he approaches the world with simplicity and the fact that his life is a song of humility..."

Bro. Rafael was admitted to the "Policlnica Miramar" on the Vigil of Christmas last December in Palma di Majorca where he remained for a month and half with a variety of infections. At the beginning of February he returned to the friary of the Porcincula in a weakened condition. During these last weeks he ebbed away little by little, like a candle burning away, until at last, on the night of Sunday, March 17, he peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.

On the morning of Monday, March 18, the provincial secretary presided over the prayers for the dead for Bro. Rafael. He was joined by the fraternity of friars at the Porcincula and by a number of other TOR fraternities in Majorca.

Bro. Rafael's body was interred in the Franciscan TOR chapel at the cemetery of Palma di Majorca on the following day, Tuesday, March 19, at noon.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Bro. Rafael took place in his native town of Art, in the conventual church of St. Antony of Padua, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20. The Eucharist was celebrated by the Minister Provincial, the Very Rev. Bernat Nebot, TOR. He was accompanied by the deceased's brother, Fr. Antonio Terrassa, TOR, and by numerous TOR friars of the fraternities of Majorca, family, friends and compatriots.

Lord God, who wished that, through his own death, our brother Rafael be configured to Christ who gave his life for us on the cross, through the renewing grace of your Son's Easter remove all vestige of earthly corruption from your servant. You have already marked his mortal life with the seal of your Holy Spirit, deign also to unite him one day to the eternal life of glory. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Given at the Porcincula, on March 20, 2002.

Immaculate Conception Province, Spain

After 73 years of religious life and 66 years of priestly service our brother,

FR. ESTEBAN CLOQUELL VALLESPIR, TOR

died at the age of 89 at the Convent of the Porcincula at 10 p.m. on July 2, 2002, after a long illness.

Esteban was born in the town of Muro in Majorca, Spain, on September 14, 1912, the son of Jordi Cloquell Moragues (+1956) and of Catalina Vallespir Estelrich (+1971).

He entered the Third Order Regular at the seminary school of the Porcincula, where he completed two years of studies in humanities and two in philosophy. Esteban was invested in the habit of the Order in the same convent on September 2, 1928, and professed his first vows on September 5, 1929. He continued his studies in Rome at the Angelicum where he received a degree in philosophy in November of 1932. He studied theology in Rome for two years and for one year at St. Francisco di Palma while completing his military service. After the military he returned to Rome where he finished his last year of theological studies. Esteban professed his Solemn Vows in the Eternal City on July 23, 1935, where he also received his minor orders and was ordained to the diaconate. He was ordained to the priesthood in the Basilica of St. John Lateran on March 28, 1936, by Bishop Jos Palica.

During the Spanish Civil War he served as a teacher in the school of St. Buenaventure of Llucmajor from July 1936 to October 1940. From 1940 to 1943 Esteban lived in Madrid during his study at the central university for a degree in philosophy and literature. At this time he was stationed with the fraternity of Bl. Ramn Llull and served as parochial vicar at the parish of St. Diego di Alcal di Vallecas.

In October 1943 Esteban was transferred to the convent of St. Francisco di Inca and worked as a teacher in the College of Bl. Ramn Llull. In 1946 he lived for six months in Madrid while he finished his degree work. In 1952 he was assigned as director of the College of Bl. Ramn Llull. At the same time he served as organist and administrator of the catechetical center of the convent where he supervised approximately 20 catechists and the education over 150 children every Sunday. While stationed in the city he organized monthly lectures, excursions, theatrical works and Eucharists for the youth.

Esteban was transferred to the convent of St. Bonaventure of Llucmajor in 1955 where he served two three year terms as local minister from 1955 to 1961 and as director of the college from 1955 to 1964. During this his time in Llucmajor he served as organist for the conventual church and for four years as a member of the municipal school commission for the town.

During the course of 1962 and 1963 Esteban received a diploma for his studies in the French language from l'Aliance Franaise in Paris.

On September of 1964 he was once again stationed in the convent of St. Francisco di Inca as local minister and director of the College of Bl. Ramn Llull. Additionally he directed the choirs of Franciscan Sisters and of the Religious Sisters of Charity. At the same time he devoted himself to preaching Forty Hours, retreats, and lectures for various groups of tertiaries. During summer vacations he gave spiritual retreats for religious communities.

In the summer of 1970 he was transferred to St. Francisco di Palma where he replaced Fr. Anthony Nicolau Burdils as director of the college. Following the stellar service of Fr. Anthony was not an easy task, but Esteban took on the responsibility with serenity, energy and dedication. He remained in this position until 1978.

The Provincial Chapter of 1977 named Esteban local vicar of the fraternity of Palma and Provincial Assistant of the SFO. He also continued as a teacher, director of the 3rd level students, and as a consultant on the commission for the future of the school.

For four three year terms from 1955 to 1967 he served as a member of the Provincial Council.

Esteban lived in the Convento of St. Francisco di Palma until 1996. In October of the same year he was transferred to the convent of the Porcincula in order to receive care for various infirmities in his advanced years. During this time he suffered a kind of thrombosis which interfered which his mobility and memory. Despite all his illnesses and sufferings Esteban was always a model of patience and Christian resignation.

This year the College of St. Francisco di Palma celebrated the 50th anniversary of its foundation on March 22, 2002. During the celebration a commemorative plaque was presented to Esteban in gratitude for his many years of service and dedication to the school.

The faithful observance of the evangelical counsels has a special witness value in our time which gives testimony that this world is not a lasting home. Therefore as pilgrims and strangers, the friars seek only Christ and the establishment of his reign.

In imitation of Saint Francis, let the friars accept death joyfully as the last offering of their lives and as the passageway to the glory of God. The celebration of death should give clear witness to the faith and hope they place in the resurrection of Jesus. As a sign of fraternal union, deceased friars, relatives, friends and benefactors are remembered with gratitude in accord with the proper law.

Brother Christian Rudolph Neetz, T.O.R., age 64, died on October 12, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Tampa, FL. Brother Christian was the son of Rudolph Carl and Catherine Krupa Neetz. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, August 28, 1938.

Brother Christian served the community as tailor, sacristan, kitchen manager and cook at St. Bernardine Monastery from 1957 - 1960 and at the Franciscan Preparatory Seminary from 1960 - 1963. From 1963 -1968, he continued his ministry at St. Thomas More House of Studies, Washington, D.C. Brother Christian served as dorm prefect, study hall proctor, Assistant P.T.A.
