Regional News - Summer 2006

REGIONAL NEWS Winter 2006

Region I: Pennsylvania

On the 4th of July seventeen friars gathered at Saint Bernardines for an indoor picnic. Traditional holiday fare was served, with many of the friars pitching in to prepare the meal. The afternoon was filled with great conversation and fraternity. As one friar stated, Its always great to get together with the guys. A real treat was having William Santre attend through the efforts of Tello Vu. Cyprian Mercieca was able to come from West Virginia and Ambrose Phillips stopped in from Washington, D.C. Many thanks to Christopher Panagoplos and the local community for their hospitality. The next regional gathering will be hosted at Saint Josephs Friary in Hollidaysburg on Labor Day. An invitation will be going out to the friars in the region. Of course, any friar who might be passing through the area is most welcome to attend. We would love to see you. Just give us a call at the Green House. (From Stephen Baker)

On Monday, June 26, in spite of inclement weather, seventy-five people gathered for Evening Prayer at Saint Clares Parish in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to bring to a close our Provinces ninety-plus years of ministry in the area. Most Reverend Joseph Adamec, bishop of Altoona-Johnstown, was in attendance. Anthony Criscitelli, Minister Provincial, presided at the service and preached. The text of his homily is included as an insert in this newsletter. A simple reception followed in the parish hall.

The Evening Prayer service was offered as a way for the friars of our Province to close prayerfully this long chapter in our history. The gathering, more importantly, provided a way to say thank you to the many good people of the former parishes of Saint Anthony (right, below) and Saints Peter and Paul (left) who we had the privilege to serve these many years. A special word of thanks to the friars who attended the service and showed their support. May God bless the people of Saint Clares with the great gift of peace.
