The Good News - Summer 2005

THE GOOD NEWS

Text Box: On June 13th, the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, over 275 people gathered at Saint Bridget Church to celebrate Patrick Foley’s ordination to the diaconate and Robert Juroszek’s ordination to the priesthood.  The celebration was marked by a great spirit of joy as family members, friends, parishioners, diocesan priests from Saint Paul and Minneapolis, and friars from around the country gathered to affirm the new ministries to which these men are called.

Text Box: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Altoona, PA, along with a Jewish Synagogue, an Eastern Orthodox Church, Mormon Church, Islamic Center, and a Hindu Temple in conjunction with the Interfaith Committee of the Ecumenical Conference of Greater Altoona will participate in a Summer Series entitled:  "Matter of Faith - A Place For All Things: The Nature of Sacred Space."  On August 4th,  Frank Scornaienchi, Christopher Panagoplos and John Rita (restoration expert and coordinator of the Restoration Project for Mount Carmel) will lead a presentation, discussion, and tour of the Church.  The presentation will include the recent work done in the restoration project of Mount Carmel, the use of the worship space, and a historical, Franciscan, and artistic overview.  This program is open to the public. The parish family of Mount Carmel is very proud to have been chosen to participate in this program.

Text Box: Congratulations to Emile Gentile!  The Pro-Ecclesia et Pontifica honor was conferred upon him  by Most Reverend Norbert Dorsey, Bishop Emeritus, during a Solemn Evening Prayer service on Monday, June 6th.  The honor was requested by Bishop Norbert Dorsey prior to his retirement.  The response from the Papal Nuncio was delayed due to Pope John Paul II’s illness and ultimate death.  The ceremony took place at Saint James Cathedral in Orlando, FL.  Emile faithfully served the Diocese of Orlando for sixteen years as Vicar for Clergy.  He retired from that position in January and continues to serve as pastor at Saint Patrick’s parish in Mount Dora, FL.

News Letter

Text Box: The north side of Minneapolis continues to be a flash-point for violent crime in the Twin Cities.  The community at Saint Bridget is committed to being a peaceful presence in this often violence-racked community.  John Kerr represented the community at a prayer vigil for a Latino man murdered one block from Saint Bridget Church.  John read a passage from scripture in Spanish and offered a brief reflection at the vigil service.

Text Box: The friars of Saint Bridget Friary gathered money from Lenten sacrifices and sent a donation to Fr. Miguel Cáceres Recalde in Paraguay.  The money will be used for the street children served by the Infant Child Jesus Center in Coronel Oviedo.  The text of Miguel’s e-mail follows:
Gracias por el trabajo que has hecho en bien de los niños pobre de mi cuidad, ellos son los más pobre y los dueño del reino.  Que el señor te bendiga y bendiga tu trabajo. [Thank you so much for your work in favor of the poor children of my town.  They are the poorest of the poor here.  They are the owners of God's Kingdom.  May God continue to bless you and your work.]

Text Box: “Friarworks”, the consortium of friars for the arts, will inaugurate its first card series with the publication of sketches by Cyprian Mercieca.  The series is titled: “The Barns of West Virginia.”  The cards are reprints of black and white drawings of six barns from the ever-diminishing rural countryside of West Virginia.  The cards will be available for sale in mid-September on-line and at select religious bookstores associated with the friars’ apostolates.
